The New England Conservatory (NEC) was founded in 1867 as the oldest independent music school in the United States. Since its opening, it has played an important role in the musical life of Boston and the world. Its mission is to provide education of the highest level to musicians of all ages and parts of the world. In addition, it has outstanding professors who encourage individual excellence in a receptive community dedicated to the highest standards of excellence in execution, teaching, and scholarships. NEC works for music to have an important place in people's lives and for a rigorous and excellent education to be recognized. Beyond the musical studio, NEC teachers help explore the historical and social frameworks that support our musical traditions.
